So they might be going overboard with the conference thing. But in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible, it was themed "We Believe the Bible." (You see what they did there with the Article of Faith? Keepin' it Mormon.)
So we went to the fireside Friday night by a guy who just rambled on about the same things he did last time: how he owned the Utah Jazz and managed Madison Square Garden and owned the Knicks. Whoopdeedoo. (Anybody know AP style for that one? I feel like it might be incorrect...)
But then Saturday afternoon I went with Richard to a few workshops about the Bible by because our friend Jon was presenting one. (All three presenters are Biblical studies graduate students.) And he was by far the best. Didn't stay for the dance. (Surprise, surprise.) A guy from Yale spoke about the origins of the Bible, and why the particular books were included. Jon (from NYU) spoke about using modern translations of the Bible such as the New Revised Standard Version to supplement the King James Version. And a guy who got cheated out of his Ph.D. by the University of Chicago spoke about how to read the Bible and love it. He said to keep in mind culture and context differences when reading and to remember that the Bible is a translated work. All very interesting.
Sunday we had some more cool people come and talk to us! First, Senator Harry Reid spoke for a few minutes. Ashley told me he spoke at BYU one time and the students booed him off the stage because he's a Democrat. (I hope that's one of the most ridiculous things you've ever heard in your whole entire life.) He was sweet. Then Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and Elder L. Tom Perry of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles spoke to us. It was a ginormous sacrament meeting, more than 1,000 YSAs in attendance.
So yeah. That happened. It was pretty cool.

Was it really a sacrament meeting? Did they pass sacrament to that many people?
