I went with a few friends to see this exhibit at the
International Center of Photography. The guy’s name was Weegee and he was like
the first tabloid photographer. He lived across the street from a police
precinct for awhile and had a police scanner in his apartment, so he’d often
beat the cops to crime scenes. He took stark photos of bodies for front pages,
and also captured crowd emotions when people showed up. It was really
interesting to see the beginnings of tabloid journalism, because his images are
actually sensational. But today, tabloids are so constructedly sensational that
it didn’t seem like any big thing. Definitely worth going, especially with a
couple other exhibits they have right now.
