So President Henry B. Eyring came to our sacrament meeting. It was fantastic. He didn’t want to speak first because he wanted to
hear the talks from our Bishop’s wife and our second counselor’s wife (he later
called them sermons). So our second counselor’s wife went first, and her talk
was great. She talked about being in New York and why she’s stayed so long, and
how all of us are here for a reason and we need to recognize the fruit of the
gospel that we have and not take it for granted. Then the Bishop’s wife talked
a bit about Lazarus and also about the fruit of the gospel. Then Eyring got up.
He wanted to focus on the fruit of the gospel because that’s what touched him
the most. Also because he had been thinking a lot about the next Ensign message
he has to write, which the theme is sharing the gospel. He said he didn’t have
any tips for us on how to share the gospel because it’s so varied according to
us and other people and the situations. He said we just have to remember that
we’ve tasted the fruit and how good it is. In one of his stories, he said he
would pray every night in his jammies in front of his three crazy roommates at
Harvard Business School. That was definitely the highlight. I think Dave put it
really well when I talked to him later when he said it always surprises him how
humble and normal and humorous apostles are. Eyring really was. He kept
referring to himself as Hal. Awesome. And he was emotional, which was sweet. He
was also kind of frail, which I always forget how old our apostles are. But he
has such a great voice! The spirit was awesome and it was wonderful that he
came and spoke and I’m grateful to have had such a wonderful last Sunday in the
ward.
