I saw this around Thanksgiving with Jon, and it was NOT my
favorite. Which Jon thought was interesting, because I absolutely LOVED
“Wicked” (it’s the same writer). I heard a lady say that she thought “Godspell”
was really campy, and that’s the perfect word for it. Jon said he felt like he
was watching a college production of it, not a Broadway one.
We had to sit on pillows right at the edge of the stage, but
we were the last to be seated in our section, so there was nothing to lean
against or room for our legs or anything (which was worse for Jon than me,
because he’s over 6 feet tall I think).
I also don’t understand the time period it’s supposed to
take place. The cast started as supposed to be philosophers, which was cool.
But they all had cell phones. Then they were dressed in modern-day clothes,
which was fine. But there is still the deception and crucifixion of the guy
that played Christ, which doesn’t happen anymore. So that was disconcerting,
and a little uncomfortable. But part of the finale was also touching.
I would not recommend seeing this play, though. There are
better ways to spend $30 in New York City. Like “Wicked,” which is right next
door.
